SoundXperience
SoundXperience is not your normal multi-sample library. Normally you will find fixed and static sounds in a multi-sample library but we wanted to make SoundXperience more flexible than that. We have sampled many great synths (both hardware and software) to create sounds which are both rich and very flexible in use...

Loopmasters- Electro Breaks

The Loopmasters tenth release, Electro Beats, takes the producer through some warpy soundscapes enabling Reason users to significantly enhance their electro tunes. This is a solid CD and as we have come to expect from Loopmasters, delivers in quality, and would keep many a producer happy for quite a while.

The CD comes in the usual formats – Rex Loops, NN-XT patches, WAV loops and one-shot samples, includes a second CD of WAV samples for easy auditioning. Sounds are mostly stereo, high quality and meticulously organized and labeled. In fact, their organization of folders has become quite a strength, and makes finding sounds fairly easy (Not like my own personal refill library). Read the rest of this entry »

Loopmasters – Afro Latin Producer

The Loopmasters series should need little introduction to most Reason users. With releases in eleven, sub Genres of Electronica these guys have become one of the major players in this increasing market.

Their recent release, AFRO-LATIN Producer, adds another 1350 samples to their extensive library. Do not assume that this is a CD of cheesy Latin percussion/ bongo loops; this is a real feather in the cap for these London-based lads, and is a powerful addition to a refill library.

The CD comes in the usual formats – Rex Loops, NN-XT patches, WAV loops and one-shot samples, includes a second CD of WAV samples for easy auditioning. Sounds are mostly stereo, high quality and meticulously organized and labeled.

Of course, within, you will find an array of percussive loops, anything from authentic Bossa nova or Samba to Brazilian techno or Drum and Bass to keep your feet moving. In fact, the percussive loops are so extensive that there are separate files for Drums and Percussion, both containing sub-folders by BPM.

However, the real jewel was the amount of “live musicianship” on the disc. It seems that Loopmasters have put together some fine session musicians to record these loops and samples – including: Guitar, funked and jazzed up. Keys, some classic Rhodes loops, Bass lines, FX to name a few.

There is an incredible brass section, which includes sub-folders of trumpet and sax, both demonstrating riffs, trills, solos and more, which sound like they captured the essence of a Cuban waterfront or an Argentinean ballroom. Furthermore, there is such a large amount of such samples, that it allows the user to layer loops with more choice.

Overall, this is a new direction for the Loopmasters, and as a result, a disc that is more outstanding. These sounds can easily be incorporated into Electro/Lounge tunes such as can be heard on the Costes compilations for example. Fine for D&B, funky house, Acid Jazz, Funk and so on. Anyone who is looking to add a bit of “spice” to their recordings ought to consider this disc and is a must have for anyone into anything Latino. Let’s smoke a cigar.

Making Patches With RF-01

Building patches with the RF-01 ReFill might seem complex and hard to learn, but it’s not. You’ll find yourself building patches in no time after reading this little RF-01 NN-XT Tutorial.

First Steps
First thing to do is to create an NN-XT. Once loaded you press the patch loading button and navigate to the RF-01 ReFill. There you load an NN-XT Osc which comes the closest to the type of sound you want to make. If you want to make a typical synth bass then the Saw and Square waves are your best bet. To make a sub bass you should try the Triangle and Sinus waveforms, etc, etc. You’ll soon find out which waveforms are best suited for a particular sound. But also remember that there are no rules in sound design. You decide how it will sound.

Layering NN-XT Osc’s
You can ofcourse stack multiple waveforms onto eachother to get to richer sounds. Or to create detuning and panning effects. This can easily be done by selecting all the zones in your exsisting patch [Ctrl]+[A], and copy the entire patch by pressing [Ctrl]+[C]. This will copy everything you have in the NN-XT. Now browse to the NN-XT Osc you want to add to your patch and load it. Now you will only see the last loaded NN-XT Osc in your NN-XT. But since we copied the previous settings you made we are now able to paste them into the patch by pressing [Ctrl]+[V]. Now you will have your previous patch plus the last loaded NN-XT Osc in your NN-XT. This process can be repeated as much as you like or till your CPU says no more. Read the rest of this entry »

Reasonbanks – Orange 2

Orange2 is the flagship sound collection of Reasonbanks (PinkNoise). It contains multi-sampled synth sounds patched up for the NN-XT and NN-19 samplers. This ReFill combines traditional multi-sampling with the concept of their Proton ReFill’s. You will find complex multi-samples as well as basic waveforms like saw, square, sine, etc. This makes for a very varied and great sounding set of patches. The sound quality is what we are used of Reasonbanks, very good!

Multi-samplesThe sample material contained in this ReFill is of a very high quality. All sample material is in a 16 bit resolution which is a good and a bad thing at the same time. It’s good because the files are much smaller and significantly shorten the load times as well as RAM load on the other side, 24 bit files are really becoming the standard. However i must say that these samples really sound very good and i have no problem at all with them being 16 bit. All samples contain perfectly set loop points.

There’s 2 kinds of multi-samples in this ReFill. You’ll find complex samples and basic oscillators. The complex samples are sounds allready programmed in the synth they were sampled from. These give you the sound tweaks possible with that particular synth. The basic oscillators are basic waveforms like saw, square and more exotic waveforms sampled dry with no effects. They are perfect for adding another dimension to the complex samples or they can be layered and tweaked to come to totally new sounds.

Patches

In the ReFill you will find folders containing patches for the NN-19 and NN-XT. You’ll find folders named NN-XT Elements and NN-19 Elements. These are the basic patches made with one multi-sample per patch. Enabling you to load and layer them easily onto eachother. There’s a folder named NN-XT Patches which contains multi-layered patches for the NN-XT. This is the most interesting folder to check out after you just installed the ReFill. It will show you what’s possible with the multi-samples. There’s another folder named NN-XToolkit. This is a very special folder as it contains patches with settings for a certain sound but without actual sample data. You can easily load in your own samples and have these particular settings applied to them. Basically this is a patch template collection with template patches for all kinds of sounds including bass, lead, pads, strings etc, etc. Highly usefull if you want to start creating patches yourself but don’t really know where to start.

2 versions

Orange2 can be ordered on DVD or on CD-ROM (3 discs). You get the ReFill plus all of the sample data outside of the ReFill for use in other applications or for further tweaking in your wave editor. This is a great thing as it doesn’t restrict you to Reason if you want to use these sounds. You can also choose to only buy the ReFill which comes cheaper as the complete package including the sample material for use in other applications.

Pricing

By default Orange2 ships on DVD. If you don’t have a DVD drive in your computer you can choose the CD-ROM version at no additional cost. The full package including the sample material will set you back 52 Euro’s. The ReFill only version costs 40 Euro’s. A reasonable price for a collection of this size.

Conclusion

Orange2 is a comprehensive collection of sounds. It utilizes the NN-XT to it’s fullest capability’s. The sample material sounds great and the included musical patches are varied and very usable. The price is very reasonable if you look at what’s on offer here. And the option to use the sound material in other applications is a thing which a lot of ReFill users want. A great ReFill which will definately add much to your Reason experience!
