What is the deal with this Midi Music?

Postby jotre » Sun Feb 18, 2007 8:18 pm

Hi Guys,

I am a DJ and have been for a few years however recently i have started thinking about making some beats, as my love for music continues to grow. I recently purchased Reason and Recycle, so i can get down to business. After reading all this info in the manuals and on this forum i cant help but feel like i am loosing my mind with all these Midi terms and definitions. I just want to put my creativity down you know, but all this talk of Midi Files, Rex Files, and Sequencers is enough to drive me insane. Can anyone just help me out a little? I feel almost a little embarassed as i thought i knew my hip hop music...but this digital stuff is another world.

My aim would be to use what i make in my dj gigs and maybe one day consider maybe selling the beats i make...so where do i begin?

How do i make Rex Files?
How can i lay down my creativity in good ol Hip Hop Style?
What are refills?
And if i make a beat on reason, is this beat then my own? Or does this come down to where i got the samples from?
I mean i see evryone talking about where to get loops and files this and that, where does the copyright come in?

Thanks A bunch yall and i hope to hear from some of you!

djing is a peace of piss (use to do it, got to boring for me) what you wana do now takes some talent, it takes thousand of hours and dollars to make those songs you play at your gigs, be prepared to do some hard work and study to get where you wana be, and if your not liking the journey id stick with djing,

use the search button, google or wiki to get the answers to those questions

im learning web desigen atm, i feel your frustration, html is a pita [/b]

to make rex files you have to use recycle. this program is super handy, basicly what it does is takes a drum beat, or even just a sound file and splices it into a bunch of pieces. you then organise the pieces to your liking which brodens your freedom.

i dont really listen to much hip hop or make it at all, but to explore your creativity you just have to figure out a few things about reason, and then keep learning more. its got so much to it i doubt anybody really knows how to use it fully. but keep playing around with new things and shit starts to improve.

refills are just collections of samples and patches. some are friggin aweseom, but then sometimes people think they're gonna be all cool and make there own just cause they can, and they bundle up a bunch of crap and you download it and delete it right away

id say if you make a beat on reason then it is all yours. i highly doubt all the big music producers use their own samples

and if you decide to use the loops and drumbeats that come with reason, or other refills, i dont think any copyright infringment problems would come your way, if they didnt want you to use their shit they wouldnt put it in a refill in the first place

hopefully this was a little helpful :)
