You can override the solo/mute buttons with any midikey you want. The trick is to have all instruments triggered when you play and only let the one through you want.
Example for reason 3.0:
Create a combinator with a mixer and two instruments inside. Instruments go into mixerchannels and mixer goes into combi-out. If you created them in order everything should be wired correct automaticly.
Right click on the mixers channel 1 mute, click "edit remote override mapping".
Select "learn from control surface input" and press the key/button you want.
Do the same with channel 2 and so on if you have more instruments.
- it works.
In 2.5 you can't do this 'trick' to get unlimited instruments, but you can have at least four. One on each midi-bus. If you know how to change midi-send on your control surface, you can even use all 16 channels in each bus. (if you can be bothered to set it up everytime, or save as patch on controller)
Combine all of the above with some splits on the nn-xt and you'll have an arsenal for a live gig going in no time.
