REASON REWIRING AND SOME BASIC QUESTIONS FOR CUBASE....

Postby kano66 » Tue Sep 11, 2007 9:20 am

Ok, So I have rewired all my reason racks to Cubase. I know that I can edit all my Reason racks in Cubase such as compression and EQ etc. What other little tricks can I do in Cubase on my reason song that will make it sound so much sweeter?

Also, when my mate introduced me to Cubase, he mentioned something about GROUP CHANNEL TRACK???? Something about the L and R channels, needing to group topgether...?? Can anyone explain this?

One more thing..... I have only used REASON to build songs (some pretty good ones at that :)

I have never used CUBASE to build a song. I have the usual instuments and some VST plugins like HALION. I can't even find the KEY EDITOR or PIANO ROLL in CUBASE. I have searched everywhere.

This may sound basic but I just can't find it.... Anyone know of the bst tutorial sites out there for CUBASE???

So yeah, what things should I be doing other than compression and EQ in CUBASE when touching up REASON tracks.. What elese is possible..?

Thanks

Yeah, he was probably talking about the fact that only the first two Rewire channels out of Reason are a stereo pair. You can create more stereo pairs from within Cubase by Rewireing the L+R out of your Reason Device into the mono Rewire Channels, then in Cubase pan those channels L+R to correspond, highlight them both and then RightClick "Link channels". They will now be working as another Stereo Pair.

As for the rest, they are pretty broad questions. I'll let others tackle them one by one.

I have a track in REASON and am guessing it could probably do with some light mastering in CUBASE such as EQ and compression. So say I rewire all my devices into CUBASE, am I best rewiring all the devices as sterio or leave them as mono??

Also, when all is mastered to some happy standard, is it possible to then still export from REASON? As I couldn't find an export option in CUBASE.

At the end of the day, CUBASE is acting as another tool along side REASON?? Am I wrong?

Cubase is so hard to get into!! Any goood tutorial sites?

It's more that REASON is acting as another tool along side CUBASE

To Export, you must do it from Cubase. Set the L+R locaters then from the "FILE" dropdown menu choose "Export > Audio Mixdown"

As for the "Mono or Stereo" question, it really all depends on whether the sounds are Mono or Stereo to begin with. Whatever they are in Reason, so they should be in Cubase.

Mastering in Cubase? Well it depends on what Mastering tools you have and what the track requires. In the final stages of mastering i'd usually, just as a rule of thumb, go for some EQing > Multiband Compression > Maximiser. But every track is different and individual channels may need some attention from VST's before the mastering is even considered. Do your vocals needs extra processing like De-Essing/Compression? Panned sounds/Pads need widening? Bass and Kick Drum need EQing? There really are countless things to think about before you go ahead here.

Also, Mastering generally should happen on the track as a whole ONCE the mix itself has been finalised. I prefer to bounce the whole track down and Master in a seperate program like a Wav Editor.
