Posting a song? Read me...

Postby xenophobe51 » Wed Nov 17, 2004 2:41 pm

Hello, freakies! :D

I just wanted to make a suggestion or two about posting and reviewing tracks to this here forum. Bear with me now, I'll try not to be too preachy...

Here's the deal: Lots of folks are posting links to their tracks all the time (and that's REALLY cool, so keep 'em coming, boys and girls!), but many of these same people are neglecting to take the time to either listen to or review tracks by their fellow freakies. Can you believe that?

Thus, lets take a moment to be courteous. I propose that if you post a track, you should take the time to review at least one other person's music -- even if the style might not be your bag. Don't think you're good enough to comment on a track by someone more seasoned? Don't be lame, you'd be surprised how important ANY input can be to a fellow musician. Don't like a track and you're afraid you'll be mean? As long as you're constructive and sensitive about your commentary, you should still put your two cents in. This Promotion forum is every bit as important as the Reason Help thread -- it helps people fix issues in a song they may not have known were wrong. 8)

Our friendly freakies out there are really working hard at becoming better musicians weather they intend to become professionals or just want something to do on a lonely Friday night :( . Help 'em out, kids!

Oh, and be nice. :D Nobody likes a troll...
Ring-a-ding ding, baby!

I agree. I think everyone's input is valuable. I had a really bad review on my second song..

lol, I listen to it now and it truly does suck. I listened to my first track and that was awful too... I wish people would leave a little more negatives so I could really figure out where I go wrong...

That's my 2c for you...

Sounds ....

Postby didymus » Thu Nov 18, 2004 1:20 am

Hi Guys,

Sounds very resonable to me (no pun intended). Even if the style of music isn’t to your taste it’s still possible to comment from a technical point of view.

Keep up the good work guys :D

Yeah, all good on this idea... Guess it's sometimes hard to DL stuff for some folks (like me...) as I have to DL a track in work, then take it home and play it... Makes it hard to be really reactive and spontaneous I guess, but I agree, if you post a track you should at least make a review at some point (and not just a nominal "Great track." or something lame like that (not that you can't say that, just that it's a bit cheap to do that just for one track because you think it's meeting the criteria of posting your track...!)

Like Didymus says, even if it's not to your taste, you can still give some advice, like if it sounds ok on your monitors, or what the mix is like etc... To be honest, because we're all united by a method rather than a genre here, it's likely that most of the time other people's stuff won't be exactly what floats your boat, but trust me, making yourself listen beyond your taste and style preferences actually improves your own analytical and critical skills which in turn helps you with your own work!

Hah, is it only me who noticed that we have a group of posters who regularly post new tracks and review others'? I could count the names on my fingers. Thus, I could generally predict how many reviews a song generally would get (without counting posts by people who already reviewed it and are making further comments or replies). Neat, eh?

I suppose I like it that way better than having 1000 active posters. In such an atmosphere, tracks are bound to get neglected. (Checked RS.net lately?)

Beware

Postby bravo433 » Fri Mar 31, 2006 4:31 am

hmmm. Seeing as my style is to create the weirdest and most aggressive music I can I will probably give bad reviews of everyone else's tracks while also posting my own tracks which most people will hate. So be it! Generally I want people to feel as though they are being tortured when listening to my music. I feel nothing but pride when someone says to me "But that's just a horrible, pointless noise!"

don't worry about that.. if you check out the promotion forum, you'll see that other people are also into that kind of stuff, and some even though they don't make it themselves.
As long as the critique has a point it's okay to say your honest oppinion. But keep in mind that a statement like just "it's horrible noise" is not helping out the poor fellow who did the track. At least have the decency to describe why "it's horrible noise". Otherwise, it only states your personal taste in music and doesn't say anything about the topic: the track.

btw. Welcome, feel free to post your most annoying track here and see how it works! :)

Well, one of my first forums was Exegene, so I'm used to feedback... getting and giving.

I hope we do great here.

I'm new here, and after posting a message and a link to my own tracks, I went trawling through the pages to see what everyone else was up to: not because this thread said I should, but because as a musician I love music. I also love to learn, and listening to what other people have created with essentially the same tools as myself is an education in itself.

Apart from a dozen tracks by the same poster, I had to get several pages into the forum before I found some music between all the 'events' posts. I listened, I liked it and I left feedback. Then I realised that this guy had posted his song over a year ago, his post had been viewed 288 times, yet I was the first person to give any feedback.

Am I the only one that finds that a bit shameful? It really bugs me that people have obviously read the post, and assumedly listened to the track, but then just couldn't be bothered to take a few seconds out of their day to give the poor guy some feedback on it.

For as long as I am a member of this forum, I for one will be actively listening and giving my humble opinions on people's work. But unfortunately I won't be here that long if people aren' going to do the same for me.
