When you edit automation, the result is usually a shaky-looking tapering wobbly curve. How about if you click on maximum volume, hold down Shift and click on volume 0, you get a linear ramp between the two points? Like the polygon tool in a painting program.

there is a line tool in reason
page 22 of the manual

OH MY GOD! But... it's right there... hehe, thanks, dunno how I missed that one. I'm too lazy to look 2 icons to the right :P

also, if you uncheck the little magnet on the same toolbar, the "snap to grid" option, you get smooth movements with any tool, or input controller you use ;)
