drugs and music

ok, here's something i often wonder about, very interested to hear some other people's opinions:

what kind of influence do you think mind-altering/mood-enhancing drugs (and experiences caused by them) could have/have had on your music?

be it the ability to focus on detail, educate yourself, think of new ideas, see things in new lights, be more creative/original, fly...whatever!

discuss!

p.s. i'm not trying to start a "drugs are great" or "drugs are bad" thread, just interested to hear people's views/experiences :)

i chose the last one. im one of the few in this country that goes clubbing for the music and the atmosphere, not the drink and/or drugs.

in fact, ive not had a drop of alchohol for a while now, it never was for me. so id be very shocked at myself if i did drugs.

i think that there have been trance music made in the past based on experiences had when taking drugs, the prodigy springs to mind. (although they didnt really make trance)

I play guitar better when I've got hangovers (but not while drunk).

The drug influence is pretty clear in some music, but I often get bored with it when I realize that it's "drug-based-music". It's all Ziggy Stardust on repeat.

I'm naturally insane enough to create music, so I voted no.

Hehe, those Sundays are magical sometimes! Don't know what it is, maybe you get more "sensitive" coz I sometimes rummage through my CDs and get all mushy and sentimental :P

The extent of my drug habit go about as far as 2 or 3 glasses of wine, never more (well OKAY I had 0.5L of whiskey once at a friend's house, won't do that again anytime soon :)) but I haven't noticed I write better music with or without drugs. If you get an idea you sit down and try to nail it. A couple glasses of wine might make you feel comfy and snug and WANT to start a new song though, but if the idea isn't there, drinking more won't help you at all.

That's the way it works for me anyway. I thought the third alternativ sounded cool and well hard and whatever, so I voted for that. B)

Hangovers are great for musicing. Hah. another new term by me.
And a little 'diddly-doo-ba-ba-zumf' is good for experimenting :D

But I have seen what drugs make to people, so I did not reply to this thread at all.

When I was about 20 I asked my mum, whether musicians take drugs to make them play better. Her reply: You'll probably make more mistakes (playing live) but you wouldnt worry about it so much :)

pretty cool really. I did perform at a gig totally drunk once, which was a nightmare...dont do that!

DJing is a different ball game and I know the right amount of weed can help you STAY in the groove, but is unlikely to assist you to GET INTO the groove, if you know what I mean.

However, one can use the experience to help you with inspiration /composing in some form or another...not live performance though.

For the record I dont advocate taking drugs. I think it depends on the individual- for some people it is ok to do the occasional E. But never never take such drugs regularly Ive seen a few too many lives screwed up on them.
