Ambience is cool for background music, but I don't listen to it as I do to other styles.

Does anyone like ambient?

So, who here likes ambient music? I am asking because, even though I listen to trance/techno, I make DnB and, now, ambient. My first track is being uploaded on di right now, so I want to know who digs the style and who doesn't :).

Thanx!

I guess it all depends on how you define 'Ambient' really dude! For me, I listen to a lot of vinyl albums when I do graphics work, stuff like Jean Michel Jarre, etc. I just picked up a Wendy Carlos album yesterday called 'Digital Moonscapes' (brand new vinyl in a charity shop!!! :D ). Also, some other wiggy stuff made in the 70's etc is cool and to me I call it 'Ambient' even thought it's from before that genre was defined as such. With the more modern stuff, I was real into The Orb, Spiritualized, Primal Scream kinda vibes, and also Flying Saucer Attack about 10, 12 years back when I used to take a lot of, ahem, well you know.

I got to say, for me that's the way it works. I listen to old stuff now as a way of admiring the groundbreakers of electronic music & equipment, and modern ambient was for when I was younger and regularly visiting outer space!!

Even though I never visited outer space ;), I still do listen to Biosphere and Boards of Canada, among others. Though, i hear "Visiting outer space" to them is real trippy. Like pictures beginning to move....

Any ambient? - Preaching at the choir..... .

Ambient is why I got into Reason in the first place. You might nominate me for King of the Obvious, but let us not forget that Ambient is not just one thing. There is "pleasant" Ambient (which I might play at any time, even if it is just to be background), or the finest of them all (in my book) - Dark Ambient, which will scare your wife and make children ask you why you play "scaaaaary music".

So, once the question has been asked - who likes what flavor?
I have been curious for a while now and now, that I am beginning to actually put things together in Reason, it would not be the worst thing ever, if I found like-inclined fellows here, on the forum (patch exchange, advice, ideas, critique, or potential audience, as that is relatively sparse in the world of POP - and absolutely no offense to any other Reasoners here, as, f.e. good techno is awesome stuff just the same!).

Floaty, or Dark? I vote for both, but much more for the latter.

Cheers!

AS a result of reading this thread I went and bought a Biosphere CD at lunchtime.
Listened to the first "track" (10:14 of almost only one note) in the car on the way back from town......

very sevenies

dunno what the album is called but the sleeve is all in French and it was 'originally broadcast on French radio'........will listen to more before I judge too harshly....

Electronic ambience

Postby heskii » Tue Feb 22, 2005 8:29 am

Pete Namlook's first albums (especially dream fish) ,
the Orb's early albums,
Aphex,
Biosphere,
Plastic Man,
all = electronic ambience in my world.

All these artists did something ground breaking in there music back in those days.
